Acorn Aluminium wins £1.6million contract with Torsion

Acorn Aluminium has been awarded the contract for windows, curtain walling and doors, on Torsion Group’s £65million Saxton Lane development in the centre of Leeds.

Aimed at the private rented sector and designed by Den Architecture, the two 18 and 22 storey tower blocks will house 349 contemporary apartments and will be built within a stone’s throw of the city centre and university campuses.

Acorn Aluminium has been appointed on a design, manufacture and install basis to supply almost 1,300 ultra-energy efficient aluminium windows in Senior Architectural Systems SPW600 system. Doors in the SPW501 and 150m2 curtain walling in the Senior SF52 system.

Paul Stevens, Commercial Director, Acorn Aluminium, said: “Saxton Lane is going to be a landmark project right in the heart of Leeds and we’re very proud to be appointed as a partner in its delivery.

“Construction will take place offsite, at MMC specialist FP McCann’s Cheshire facility, which means our teams will effectively work as an extension of its manufacturing lines, something which we have broad level of experience having completed a number of projects previously, including award winning projects at Hinckley Point.

“The specification is for a high level of energy efficiency and performance and will achieve an overall u-value of 1.4W/m2K.”

The SF52 Curtain Walling System is defined by a consistent slim 52mm sightline, delivering levels of thermal efficiency far beyond current building regulations. It offers an exceptional level of flexibility and is suitable for both ground floor and high-rise applications, with full weather testing to CWCT and EN13830. It has a life expectancy of 40 years or more and is 100% recyclable at end of life.

The Senior SPW600 is a highly versatile 75mm window system, while its also available in the SPW600e enhanced thermal option, which uses additional thermal inserts on top of the latest polyamide thermal breaking technologies used across the range. Accommodating glass units of up to 56mm, this combines to create a highly cost-effective commercial window capable of achieving a BFRC A Rating.

The SPW501 is a high performance, thermally broken polyamide aluminium framing system, designed specifically for high pedestrian uses and applications. It’s available in a range of configurations, including standard pivot and anti-finger trap doors.

“Offsite and MMC are playing a bigger part in construction. The immediate benefit in architectural and commercial glazing is the saving you make in installation in the time you spend getting to working height – doors and windows simply pass on down the line”, Paul said.

“It can, however, create its own set of challenges, which is where the expertise that we have in delivery can really add value to our customers”, he added.

Torsion Group’s development of Saxton Lane is scheduled for completion in early 2023.
