Acorn on-site at logistics centre

Acorn Aluminium is on-site at logistics specialists Prologis UK’s Prologis Park Hemel Hempstead.

Appointed by main contractor VolkerFitzpatrick, the scheme includes five new industrial distribution units, totalling more than 280,000sq ft.

Delivered to a target EPC of A+ and BREEAM Outstanding Rating, the project is focused on the delivery of high quality and sustainable industrial space.

Acorn Aluminium has been appointed to supply and install the curtain walling and window elements on two of the five units, including brise soleil systems.

These are being supplied in the SF52 curtain walling and SPW600 systems from Senior Architectural Systems, plus the SPW501 commercial door.

Paul Stevens, Managing Director, Acorn Aluminium: “The industrial and logistics space, is very competitive and so developers and investors are placing significant focus on sustainability and performance to offer end-occupiers lower through-life occupancy and running costs, as well creating better working environments.

“We were involved in an earlier phase of the development and we’re delighted to be invited back on the strength of our performance and relationship with VolkerFitzpatrick.”

The SF52 curtain walling system from Senior Systems, is defined by a consistent slim 52mm sightline, delivering levels of thermal efficiency far beyond current building regulations.

It also offers an exceptional level of flexibility and is suitable for both ground floor and high-rise applications, with full weather testing to CWCT and EN13830.

It’s being supplied by Acorn to the Prologis Park Hemel Hempstead scheme in RAL7016.

The Senior SPW600 is a highly versatile 75mm window system, delivering an enhanced level of thermal performance by combining the latest polyamide thermal breaking technologies, with additional thermal inserts. This combines to create a highly cost-effective commercial window capable of achieving a BFRC A Rating.

In addition to the SF52, Acorn Aluminium also manufactured Senior’s SPW501 commercial aluminium door system in the entrance design to the building, maximising the flow of natural light to create a welcoming and open space.

The high performance, thermally broken polyamide aluminium framing system, is ideal for high pedestrian uses and applications, and is available in a standard and narrower 58mm clip and flush mullion, offering additional design options.

It’s also available in a range of configurations, including standard pivot and anti-finger trap doors.

Curtain walling was manufactured by Acorn with factory fitted bracketry ready to accommodate brise soleil systems, also supplied by Acorn to the scheme.

Glazing is being manufactured30/4/24 in a 6mm Parsol Green outer pane, argon cavity and 6mm Planitherm Low E internal pane to achieve an overall u-value of 1.4W/m2K

“Prologis Park Hemel Hempstead epitomises good design in the industrial and logistics space, with a very strong focus on sustainability but also the creation of a high-quality environment”, Paul said.

“We have a number of similar projects behind us and an exceptional track level of delivery, supporting main contractors in maximising budgets and through-life value.”

Acorn’s other projects in the industrial and logistics space include the Daventry International Freight Terminal (DIRFT). A rail-road intermodal freight terminal is now home to the new Royal Mail National Distribution Centre which opened in 2023.

Acorn Aluminium was appointed by the main contractor, Buckingham Group to supply more than 1,800m2 of curtain walling and glazing to the site, plus a further 600mat a second and separate, Amenity Hub building, which will be used by Prologis as flexible office and training space.
